Shri. S Somanath, Chairman, ISRO & Secretary, DOS inaugurated the Two-day National Conference on New Developments in Polymeric Materials, DPM 2023, organized by the Thiruvananthapuram Chapter of The Society for Polymer Science, India. The Chairman remarked that the conference is rich with its scientific content through its aptly chosen technical sessions on various advanced topics in polymeric science. During his inaugural address, he highlighted that polymeric systems have plenty of applications in space technology, encompassing microelectronics, electronic packaging, composite structures, sealing systems for liquid fuels, binders for solid propellants, adhesives, insulation systems, solar cells, batteries and antennas for rockets, launch vehicles, and satellites. He told that he has been amazed by the versatility of polymers for use in flexible and stiff structures, wider service temperature, and other tailorable properties. He also addressed the challenges in the area such as application in extreme temperatures, fuel & metal compatibility of polymers, sealant stability under high pressure etc. and urged the young scientists to take up such areas for research and develop viable solutions. He also stated that polymers have been used in other specialized domains like healthcare, construction, automobiles, etc. and have become an inevitable part of our lives. He concluded his speech by appreciating SPSI and the polymer scientific fraternity for their excellent work and conveying his best wishes for the conference.
