The ISTRAC Advanced Radar Research Facility (IARRF) is being established as a multidisciplinary platform to advance research in next-generation radar technologies, which play a pivotal role in ionospheric and atmospheric science, weather monitoring, cloud studies, and space weather studies. The facility will enable scientists to observe and understand important processes in the atmosphere and near-Earth space environment, supporting improved weather prediction, space-weather assessment, communication and navigation studies, and future space mission and application. Its societal applications are extensive: supporting flash-flood and urban-flood warnings, improving thunderstorm and lightning nowcasting, guiding aviation and airport safety, helping farmers plan irrigation, harvesting, and crop protection, and supporting agricultural advisories during heavy rainfall and hail events. Additional radars will also be established in this facility after due approvals by the government, as and when needs arise. These radars will cater to both regional and national needs.
IARRF will also serve as a shared research and innovation platform for students, universities, research institutions, start-ups, industry, and young scientists. It will provide opportunities to conduct experiments, develop new radar technologies, validate scientific models, and translate research ideas into practical applications. By bringing together academia, national laboratories, and industry, the facility will help create a strong research ecosystem, encourage interdisciplinary collaboration, develop expertise, promote indigenous technology development, and inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers. The facility will also house a space exhibition highlighting the major achievements of the Indian space program that will inspire and motivate students and young professionals in taking up space research as a career.
