ISRO Robotics Challenge – URSC (IRoC-U) 2026 Inspires Young Innovators to Shape India's Future in Space Exploration
The ISRO Robotics Challenge – URSC (IRoC-U) is an annual national-level innovation challenge organised by U R Rao Satellite Centre (URSC), ISRO, since 2024 to commemorate the historic soft landing of the Chandrayaan-3 Vikram Lander near the lunar south pole. Conceived in the spirit of innovation, self-reliance and scientific excellence, the challenge provides a unique platform for students across the country to develop advanced technologies aligned with the future needs of India's space programme.
The third edition, IRoC-U 2026, featured the theme ‘Towards Swarm Expedition: Autonomous Surveyor Challenge for Exploration, Navigation and Dynamics (ASCEND)’, challenging participants to design and demonstrate a fully autonomous unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and base station capable of surveying, navigation, feature detection, autonomous landing, data transfer and charging in a GPS-denied environment, closely simulating future planetary exploration missions. The competition enabled students to transform classroom concepts into sophisticated autonomous robotic systems through a rigorous multi-stage evaluation process comprising registration, preliminary, qualification, elimination and final field rounds.
Final Field Round Showcases India's Emerging Engineering Talent
The Final Field Round of IRoC-U 2026 was conducted at U R Rao Satellite Centre (URSC), Bengaluru, from 21 to 23 July 2026, bringing together the country's most promising young innovators after an extensive nationwide selection process involving nearly 590 registered teams, with only the top twenty teams advancing to the finals.
The event was inaugurated by Shri M. Sankaran, Director, URSC, in the presence of Dr. V. Koteswara Rao, Chief Evaluator, and Shri K. V. S. Bhaskar, Chairperson, IRoC-U 2026. During the three-day event, the finalist teams demonstrated remarkable technological ingenuity by executing complex autonomous missions that reflected real-world challenges expected in future planetary exploration. Their innovative solutions showcased excellence in robotics, artificial intelligence, autonomous navigation, computer vision and embedded systems, highlighting the growing capabilities of India's student community in advanced engineering.
Addressing the participants, the dignitaries emphasized that IRoC-U has evolved into far more than a robotics competition. Conceived following the historic success of Chandrayaan-3, the initiative has emerged as a national innovation platform that encourages students to work on engineering challenges representing the next frontier of India's space ambitions. Participants were encouraged to move beyond conventional classroom learning, embrace complex technological problems with confidence and cultivate the conviction that no engineering challenge is beyond the reach of determined and innovative minds.
Chairman, ISRO Calls Upon Students to Become Architects of India's Future Space Missions
The valedictory ceremony on 23 July 2026 was graced by Dr. V. Narayanan, Secretary, Department of Space and Chairman, ISRO, whose inspiring address encapsulated the broader vision behind IRoC-U. On the occasion, Dr. V. Narayanan formally released the IRoC-U 2026 Souvenir, commemorating the successful conduct of the 3rd edition of the challenge, celebrating the remarkable achievements, innovation and dedication of the participating students teams, mentors, evaluators and organizers.
Delivering the keynote address, Chairman, ISRO described the participants as the future architects of India's space programme and emphasized that initiatives such as IRoC-U play a pivotal role in nurturing scientific temper, fostering innovation and preparing the next generation of engineers, scientists and technology leaders who will shape India's future in space.
Recalling India's extraordinary journey—from the humble beginnings when rocket components were transported on bicycles and bullock carts to globally acclaimed achievements such as the Mars Orbiter Mission, Chandrayaan-3, SPADEX and the NASA–ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) mission—he reminded the students that every milestone in the nation's space programme had been achieved through perseverance, innovation, teamwork and unwavering confidence in indigenous capabilities.
He encouraged the participants to dream beyond today's achievements, embrace ambitious engineering challenges with confidence and become creators of transformative technologies rather than mere users of technology. Urging them to pursue excellence with determination and resilience, he expressed confidence that the innovations emerging from young minds today would lay the foundation for India's future achievements in space exploration and technological leadership.
His address resonated strongly with the participants, reinforcing the belief that the next defining chapter of India's space programme will be written by young innovators who possess the courage to dream boldly, innovate fearlessly and persevere relentlessly.
Innovation Beyond Competition
Dr. V. Koteswara Rao, Chief Evaluator of IRoC-U 2026, described the event as a true festival of innovation, appreciating the exceptional quality of the student solutions and the spirit of healthy competition demonstrated throughout the challenge.
Shri M. Sankaran, Director, URSC, highlighted that the true success of IRoC-U lies not merely in identifying winners, but in nurturing confidence, technical competence, creativity, teamwork and a lifelong passion for learning among young innovators. He noted that the experience gained through solving real-world engineering problems equips students with the mindset and capabilities required to contribute meaningfully to India's future space missions.
Equally inspiring were the experiences shared by the participants themselves. They spoke of months of experimentation, repeated redesigns, failed prototypes, crashed drones, sleepless nights and relentless perseverance that ultimately transformed ideas into fully autonomous robotic systems. For many students, IRoC-U became a life-changing journey that strengthened their technical capabilities while fostering resilience, problem-solving ability, collaboration and lasting friendships with peers from across the country.
The winners of IRoC-U 2026 will be announced during the National Space Day 2026 celebrations on 23 August 2026.
