The Indian Mission Control Center (INMCC)/ISRO is conferred with the National Search and Rescue Award for Ashore Unit for the year 2022-23. National Maritime Search and Rescue Board (NMSARB) has chosen INMCC as the best Ashore unit in India for 2022-23 for the seamless dedicated support provided for Satellite aided Search and Rescue (SASAR) services to the national as well as international community. Mr. Suresh R Naik, Manager, INMCC received the award from Director General - Indian Coast Guard during National Maritime Search And Rescue Board meeting held at Kolkata on 12th Oct 2023.
India participates in the International Cospas-Sarsat Programme, a satellite-aided search and rescue (SAR) initiative though ISRO. INMCC established in ISTRAC, Bengaluru co-ordinates the activities. INMCC operates through SAR payloads on Indian geostationary satellites. It has a mission control centre (MCC) with local user terminals (LUTs) at Lucknow and Bengaluru. It receives the data from the Indian LUTs and global network of MCCs and disseminates timely and accurate alerts to the rescue authorities as per the Data distribution plan laid by Cospas-Sarsat Organization.
INMCC has helped in rescuing over 2500 lives in about 180 incidents. INMCC also maintains National Beacon Registration Database through its website where SAR users can register themselves with beacon information. Currently over 20000 beacons are registered. INMCC conducts biennial beacon exercises in association with NMSARB. INMCC helps SAR users in beacon coding, beacon testing and provides SAR awareness training to the stakeholders through refresher course, SAR seminar & workshops, and user awareness programmes in association with Indian Coast Guard and Airports Authority of India.
