Distress Alert Transmitter (DAT)
INSAT based Distress Alert Transmitter (DAT) is used to transmit emergency conditions and position location to a central hub station via UHF transponder of INSAT for rescue operation. It can be easily installed in boats or other vehicles. In case of emergency, user just needs to switch on the DAT unit. User is required to select a message (e.g. fire in boat) by pressing the corresponding switch provided in the system. The DAT combines the message with position of the boat obtained through GPS, and transmits the same to a central HUB station. The DAT will repeat the message every minute for first five minutes and then every five minutes till it is switched off manually or until the battery life gets over. Intended for emergency message communication transmission for all type of sea going vessels especially useful for fisherman.

Dual Polarization LIDAR (DPL)
Compact Dual Polarization LIDAR developed by ISRO provides an insight in locating the presence of aerosol particles and clouds in the atmosphere which plays a major role in regulating the earth’s climate and air quality. Rising levels of air particles (aerosols) and particularly those arising from industrial and automobile smokes , is a major concern, in terms of both human health and global warming. The lidar system uses a single wavelength laser for excitation of the atmosphere and performs polarization diversity measurement in receiver for detection and discrimination of various suspended particles/aerosols of interest. DPL, an active LIDAR instrument with inbuilt polarization capability probes the properties of thin clouds and air borne particles in the atmosphere. The LIDAR vertical profiles provide detailed structure and content of aerosol particles, evolution of atmospheric boundary layer height, cloud height, identification of aerosol plumes in urban and industrial areas etc.

Search and Rescue Beacon
Search and Rescue Beacon is an affordable and technically advanced electronic device that helps to rescue people in distress through satellite communication. The beacon transmits encoded digital message that contains information about the beacon, such as its unique identification number, country where the beacon is registered etc. along with current location of the beacon. The beacon gets location information from Global Positioning System. Various search and rescue satellites under COSPAS-SARSAT network receives transmitted signals. The messages are processed and retransmitted to different ground stations. These dedicated ground stations receives message and alert rescue centres nearest to spot of accident. The rescue centre in turn initiates rescue operation. The beacon is used in sea, on difficult terrains on the land and in air by various groups of people.

Polyurethane Foot
Polyurethane systems are mainly used as microcellular elastomers and foams. The development of PU foams for rocket motor applications has resulted in an important spin off in the form of artificial foot prosthesis. ISRO has developed the moulding technique to produce integral skin polyurethane foot possessing required mobility, gait dorsiflexion, planar flexion properties etc. The PU foot developed by ISRO has numerous advantages over the traditional Jaipur foot. The prostheses were made of variable density microcellular elastomer. It has natural look, light weight, more durable, cosmetic, comfortable, slip resistant and easy to manufacture. The average weight of the foot is about 500 g. ISRO has transferred the technology of making PU foot to a social organization viz. Bhagwan Mahavir Viklang Sahayta Samithi (BMVSS), Jaipur. The license was given free of charges and is targeted to provide more than 20,000 foot per year for non commercial purposes. Field trials and rehabilitation camps have been organized by BMVSS at various places. Fire Extinguishing Powder ‘OLFEX’
ISRO has developed fire extinguishing powders ‘OLFEX’ for flammable liquid and gas fires and Ternary Eutectic Chloride (TEC) powder for metal fires. OLFEX is a reaction product of urea and potassium bicarbonate. The product is having properties at par with the imported powder, ‘MONNEX’, ‘PURPLE-K’ etc. Two parties were successful in manufacturing the technology. The first licensee scaled up the technology from lab level to commercial level. Both parties were successful in commercializing the products. The technology was recently transferred to two other parties. OLFEX is having good market in India and is replacing the imported product MONNEX.
Artificial Denture Material ‘ACRAMID’
Polyaramid reinforced plastic is a popular composite used for various launch vehicle applications. ‘ACRAMID’ is yet another space spin off from ISRO developed from composites technology. ACRAMID is a denture material developed based on composite technology. ACRAMID is the composite of polyaramid fibres and poly methyl methacrylate resin. ACRAMID is used for fixed prosthodontic restoration when a tooth is lost. The conventional treatment is not popular among the common folks due to the prohibitive material and fabrication cost of prosthesis. Materials presently used are metallic alloys containing gold, silver and ceramics. Fabrication using these materials requires sophisticated equipments. ACRAMID is a viable substitute for metal, alloys and ceramics. It is made with short fibre reinforcement to avoid microcracks and longitudinal reinforcement to withstand operational loads. Toxicological and biocompatibility tests showed no ill effects. Clinical trials showed that the prosthesis would remain successful for many years. Product testing for mechanical loads has demonstrated good margin of safety. The advantages of ACRAMID are; cost 5% that of gold, better aesthetics because of matching colour, light weight, easily processible , need minimum lab equipments and easily repairable. The ACRAMID prosthesis has been worked out in such a way to avoid costly equipment for the making of dentures. VSSC has recently transferred the technology to an SME to commercialise the product. The party has initiated marketing efforts to popularize this material as a cheaper denture implant for fixed orthodontic restoration.
