Department of Space has the primary responsibility of promoting development and application of space science and technology to assist in all-round development of the nation. With this end in view, DOS has evolved the following programmes:
- INSAT programme for telecommunications, broadcasting, meteorology, developmental education, etc.
- Remote Sensing programme for application of satellite imagery for various developmental purposes.
- Development of spacecraft and associated technologies for communications, resources survey and space sciences.
- Research and Development in Space Sciences and Technologies for sub-serving the end of applying them for national development.
- Launch Vehicle programme having indigenous capability for launching spacecraft.
The Department is committed to:
- Provide national space infrastructure for the telecommunication needs of the country.
- Provide satellite services required for weather forecasting, monitoring, etc.
- Provide satellite imagery required for the developmental and security needs of the country.
- Provide satellite imagery and specific products and services required for the application of space science and technology for developmental purposes to the Central Government, State Governments, Quasi Governmental Organisations, NGOs and the private sectors.
- Proof of concept demonstration of Space Applications.
- Promote Research and Development in space sciences and technology.
While implementing the above objectives, DOS will:
- Provide required transponders and facilities out of its own capacity as well as by hiring additional capacity, if need be.
- Register Indian Satellite System for public and private sectors.
- Provide launch services to meet national requirements and commercial needs from abroad.
- Provide its products and services in a prompt and efficient manner to all the users/clients.
